FIELD TRAINING WITH OIKOS IN ZANZIBAR

Empowering Rangers with Cluey in Tanzania

In the last week of July, together with John Lyakurwa, a lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam, Oikos held a hands-on field training session on Cluey - our smart data collection app for those monitoring protected areas.

Ten dedicated rangers from the Ngezi-Vumawimbi Nature Reserve received smartphones and practical training on how to:

  • Monitor flora and fauna

  • Geolocate wildlife sightings

  • Track patrol routes

  • Report threats with geo-tagged photos

Because Cluey works offline, rangers can collect data even in remote areas. Once a connection is available, everything syncs automatically - reducing the risk of data loss and ensuring seamless reporting. With this training, every observation in the field becomes part of a shared, near real-time dataset - enhancing ecological monitoring, patrol safety, and adaptive forest management.

A big thank you to Oikos, John Lyakurwa, and the committed rangers of Ngezi-Vumawimbi. Together, we are turning information into protection.
